Seasonal Writing Pens Distributed by Michaels Stores

Michaels Stores, headquartered in Irving, Texas recalled their products known as seasonal writing pens after the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission found excess levels of lead in the pens. The CPSC in the United States holds the responsibility for regulating health and safety standards in products used by United States consumers. Consumers have the right to expect that the products they buy will not result in detrimental effects on health, such as occurs when the lead level is too high in the product. The surface coating of the pens distributed by the Irving, TX firm have been found to exceed allowable lead content levels.

Product Description

The recalled products in this instance are four individually sold pens that are finished in seasonal themes. The designs are Flower Writer, Christmas Writer, Spooky Writer and Easter Writer. The Flower Writer pen features a bright green pen body with a rosebud design on the upper end of the pen. The Christmas Writer pen is bright white with a Frosty the Snowman figure on the end. Frosty sports a red tie and a brightly wrapped Christmas parcel. Spooky Writer pen is decorated with Halloween themes such as a skull and crossbones. The body of the pen is bright blue. Easter Writer pen is the most detailed of the four designs with Easter baskets forming the body of the pen topped by a chick breaking out of an egg.

Hazardous Writing Pens

The colorful coatings of the pen’s surface is the part of the pen that has the overly high levels of lead in the paint. The pens were manufactured in China for the Michaels Stores, headquartered in Irving, Texas. Because the pens were found to contain excess levels of lead in the pen surface coatings, the importing business, Michaels Stores Inc is voluntarily cooperating with the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission to recall the pens. Recalling the pens means that the danger of the detrimental effects of the lead content covering the pens will not be allowed to harm consumers.

Availability of the seasonal writing pens

Over 310,000 seasonal pens are being recalled in order to protect consumers from excess levels of lead in the pen coatings. Dozens of Michaels Stores are found in many United States cities. The product inventory consists of many household items as well as home office and craft products. Because of the seasonal nature of the pens, they were displayed at different seasons of the year. All of the pens have been recalled, effective April, 2008. The typical cost of the pens is set at $1.

Remedial Actions

Consumers who have purchased any of the Seasonal Writing Pens should immediately refrain from using the pens and return them to any of the Michael Store sites for a refund.
