Munire ‘Newport Rubbed Black’ Cribs and Matching Furniture Pieces

The recent recall of Munire Furniture’s Newport Rubbed Black Cribs and related furniture pieces is just one example of the efforts of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission’s efforts to monitor and enforce standards for maximum lead content in products distributed to U.S. consumers. Governments have the responsibility to protect the consumers within their borders against known health and safety hazards related to the products the citizens purchase and use. The CPSC tests hundreds of products for lead content and works with the manufacturers or distributors to jointly issues a voluntary recall on products that do not meet the necessary standards.

Product Description

Munire Furniture Inc of Piscataway, New Jersey manufactured the Newport Rubbed Black 4-in-1 Crib and matching furniture pieces. They were actually produced in Indonesia. The products in question are made of wood with a black finish over a red paint. Two different crib models, Newport Lifetime Crib and Newport Olde World Crib, Model #’s 7900 and 7901 respectively are involved in the recall. In addition, the following matching pieces are being recalled: Nightstand (Model 7902), Five Drawer Dresser (Model 7905), Double Dresser (Model 7906), Conversion Kit for Lifetime Crib (Model 7907), Combo (Model 7908), Bookcase (Model 7914), Mirror (Model 7915), Hutch for Combo & Double Dresser ( Model 7918), Armoire (Model 7929) and a Guardrail for the Lifetime Crib (Model 7975).

Hazardous Children’s Furniture

High lead content in paint where young children have access to ingest the paint is one of the common causes of lead poisoning with all the detrimental effects on the health of individuals. At least one child has ingested paint from the crib and has been diagnosed with lead poisoning. Because the body mass of the infant and small child is so much less than that of adults, even a minute amount of excess lead content can create much stronger effects. The country of origin, date and model number can be found on the side panel label on the crib. The year of manufacture is on the back panel of the other pieces.

Availability of the Cribs and Matching Pieces

The Newport Rubbed Black 4-in-1 and matching furniture pieces were sold at specialty stores such as baby boutiques across the nation during the period of April 2006 and November 2008. The pieces varied in price with the cribs costing about $600 and matching pieces going for between $700 and $1000. For additional accessories, the price ran about $170. About 3000 cribs and 6000 matching pieces were sold during the stated period.

Remedial Actions

Owners of one of the recalled cribs or other furniture and accessory items should cease use of the items immediately and contact the Munire Company for a replacement coupon that can be redeemed for a new safer product at no additional costs.
