The hazard of the Deluxe Art Set is found, not in the colors or paints of the contents of the wooden box, but rather in the painted covering of the outside of the wooden box that holds the art set implement. This painted coating contains levels of lead that are higher than the federal standards for lead paint content allow. When these paint components exceed the federal levels, a voluntary recall is initiated with cooperation between J C Penney of Plano, Texas and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Around 19,000 units have been recalled in order to protect the consumers who have purchased the problem. The sets were sold during the period of September 2005 through August 2007. The art sets were manufactured in Taiwan and in in the country of Vietnam and imported by J C Penney into the United States.

Any consumers who have purchased the J C Penney Deluxe art sets should immediately discontinue the use of the sets by young children, since they are the ones who are most affected by lead levels.
