Disney Store ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Sleeping Bags

A consumer in the United States and around the world is faced with literally thousands of buying decisions each year. No one wants to select products that are known to be detrimental to the health or safety of the individual or family members, particularly children. It is for this reason that responsible government entities provide for setting and enforcing standards about levels of lead content in the products available in the United States When a product, such as the Disney Store Pirates of the Caribbean Sleeping Bags is found to exceed the maximum limits for lead content, the product is recalled through a cooperative effort with the Consumer Products Safety Commission and the responsible company.

Product Description

The Pirates of the Caribbean sleeping bags for children are produced in China and imported by Hoop Retail Stores of Secaucus, New Jersey. The retailer is the Disney Store headquartered in Pasadena, California. The sleeping bags included in the sleeping bags are those with cartoon characters of Davey Jones and Jack Sparrow on the front of the bag. The logo label inside the sleeping bag contain the style number F1652B0003. The skull design sleeping bag is NOT included in the recall.

Hazardous Sleeping Bags

About 4100 sleeping bags for children are affected by the recall notice. The high lead content is found in the surface paint on the sleeping bag’s zipper pull. When paint is worn off or flakes off, it can result in lead being absorbed through the skin or breathed into the lungs. Occasionally, flakes of paint will be ingested through handling the zipper pull and then putting fingers into the mouth. Although the zipper pull seems like a relatively small object to be causing so much trouble, lead content is such a critical aspect of health, that it must be monitored and regulated by the CPSC.

Availability of the Sleeping Bags

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ children’s sleeping bags were sold exclusively at Disney stores across the nation during the months of April through October 2007. The popularity of the sleeping bags was largely due to the popularity of the movie characters during the same period of time. The typical retail price for the sleeping bags was set at $25. The bags were also found online at the Disney store sites.

Remedial Actions

When a voluntary recall on a product is issued, the company involved is prepared to take the necessary steps to get the product out of circulation as quickly as possible. In the case of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ children’s sleeping bag, the product should be removed from contact with children in the household quickly and the bag can then be taken to any Disney store or outlet for a refund or replacement of the sleeping bag.
