Children’s Sunglasses by Axiom

Although consumers want to provide the best quality and safest products for use in their households, it is not always possible to determine whether a specific product meets the best health and safety standards to prevent detrimental effects. In this instance, the United States consumer is protected by the standards set and enforced by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. This agency tests to ensure that the levels of lead in paint or coatings for a product do not exceed a recommended maximum level. Testing for lead content is just one of the standards monitored by the CPSC. Excess lead leads to a voluntary product recall by the distributor or importer, as is the case with the Axiom children’s sunglasses.

Product Description

Two tone children’s sunglasses by Axiom International, a Billings Montana company are one of the recently recalled products by the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission. The sunglasses come in Spiderweb Red and Spiderweb Blue. There is a small spiderweb design in black that is etched on the nose piece and across the bridge of the glasses. The words “Made in China” appear on the right hand side of the frame. The sunglasses design is obviously a favorite with children and the size is consistent with children’s sizes.

Hazardous Sunglasses

The recall of the two children’s sunglasses is due to the surface paint that decorates the eyeglasses. It has a level of lead content that is higher than that allowed by the standards set by the United States government through the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Any area of the sunglasses that touches the skin of the child can result in danger to the health of the child. Minute amounts of the lead content enter into the system of the child leaving long term detrimental effects.

Availability of the Sunglasses

In May 2007 through August 2008, the Spiderweb children’s sunglasses were available for sale at hardware stores, party stores and discount dollar stores throughout the United States. The usual price ranged from $1 to $5. A total of approximately 5,300 units are impacted by the recall notice. The nationwide location of sales means that the recall is effective nationwide as well.

Remedial Actions

As with any recall situation, the offending items should be removed from circulation as soon as the recall is announced. It is particularly important that children not be exposed to high lead content levels because the lead is so much more deadly when it comes in contact with a child. This is due both to the smaller body mass of the child and the fact that the child is still growing and developing.
