Benjamin International Recalls Pendants and Candle Charms – Risk of Lead Exposure

Products, any products, need to be safe for use. If a product has a an excess amount of a particular component, whose intake in any way or form could lead to a health risk; then such a product must be removed from the market. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is an organization whose aim is to protect the public from the risks of serious injury or death that could result from the use of thousands of types of consumer products.

This Commission has, in cooperation with Benjamin International initiated the voluntary recall of Fairy Dust Pendants and Candle Charms. This is on account of excess levels of lead that was found in the product. Unless, you are given other instructions, you must stop using this product on an immediate basis.

Description of the Product

Fairy Dust Pendant and Candle Charms are made of pewter. Moreover, 12 pendants were offered in one collection. Moreover, the pendants were also sold separately on a variety of candles. These candles were aromatic in nature and colorful. One could choose from an array of scents and colors when it comes to Fairy Dust Candle Charms.

Hazard of the Pendants and Charms

High levels of lead were found in the Fairy Dust Pendants and Candle Charms. Now, we must be aware that lead has a high amount of toxicity. Therefore, there is a federal standard designated for lead content in a product and the lead content must not exceed these levels.

If it does exceed these levels then a health hazard through lead pollution/poisoning presents itself. Lead could affect the brain development of a child, giving rise to developmental delays. This could occur even with low levels of lead exposure. Low levels of lead could also affect the adult brain, and lead also has carcinogenic properties.

Availability of the Product

This product has been manufactured in Hong Kong and imported by Benjamin International, of Middlebury, Connecticut. Between February 2004 and February 2008, this product was easily available at nation wide gift shops. The pendants cost anywhere between $6 and $8 and the charms with candles were priced between $12 and $15. The fact that these products were easily available meant that the Fairy Dust Pendants and Candle Charms needed to be recalled as soon as they were identified as having violated the federal lead standards.

Remedial Measures

Some 57,000 units of Fairy Dust Pendants and Candle Charms have been recalled from the market. The good thing is that there have been no incidents or injuries that have been reported with respect to the use of these products. Consumers who have bought these products should stop the use of the Fairy Dust Pendants and Candle Charms immediately and contact Benjamin International to replace the pendant/charm.
